Elk Grove teen aims to be Distinguished Young Woman of America

An Elk Grove Village teen is participating in a national competition starting Thursday in hopes of beating out 49 others for the title of Distinguished Young Woman of America.

Chase Dorn is representing Illinois in the 58th Distinguished Young Women National Finals, a scholarship competition being held this week in Mobile, Alabama.

The 2015 James B. Conant High School graduate is expected to perform a baton twirling routine to "Sing Sing Sing" during a talent presentation - one of several categories contestants are being judged on. Participants also will compete in the categories of self-expression and fitness, as well as complete an individual interview with a panel of five judges.

Dorn's scholastic performance is being scored through an evaluation process of her high school academic record and standardized test scores, officials said.

Ten finalists will be selected on Saturday before a winner is chosen, getting a share of $150,000 in cash scholarships.

Dorn was featured as a Daily Herald Suburban Standout in September.
