Why more angst is coming for I-90 drivers

Jane Addams Tollway (I-90) drivers can expect some changes coming next week at the Elmhurst Road interchange.

The tollway is widening the toll road and rebuilding the Elmhurst Road bridge over I-90.

New ramps on the east side of the bridge will open to take I-90 drivers heading to and from the east. Existing ramps on the west side will close permanently to make room for new accesses for I-90 travelers to and from the west.

All vehicles will shift over to the newly completed southbound Elmhurst Road bridge allowing work crews to tear down and rebuild the northbound bridge.

The shifts will occur throughout the week and result in two southbound lanes and one northbound lane being open at the interchange. This traffic pattern will remain through the fall.

The Elmhurst Road interchange is being constructed as a diverging diamond.

That type of interchange shifts traffic into opposite lanes using signals on bridges or underpasses so that vehicles can turn left onto the highway without facing oncoming cars. Then, traffic is routed back to the right side of the road.

Look out for more ramp switches, closures on I-90
