North Chicago men resentenced for 2007 murder

Two North Chicago men, who were twice convicted of fatally shooting a woman and injuring two men in a hail of gunfire in 2007, were resentenced to decades in prison.

William Fillyaw, 37, was sentenced to 100 years behind bars, while accomplice Johnny Parker, 31, was sentenced to 75 years for killing Lasondra Shaw, 28, during a home invasion at a North Chicago apartment building.

Fillyaw received 60 years for first-degree murder, and 20 years on each of two counts of attempted murder, Assistant State's Attorney Ryan Koehl said. Fillyaw is required to serve 100 percent of the murder conviction sentence and 85 percent of the attempted murder conviction sentences before being eligible for parole, Koehl said.

Parker received 55 years for first-degree murder, Koehl said, and two 10-year sentences for attempted murder. Parker also is required to serve 100 percent of the murder conviction sentence and 85 percent of the attempted murder conviction sentences before being eligible for parole.

Authorities said Fillyaw and Parker kicked open Shaw's 13th Street apartment door June 29, 2007, and began firing a shotgun and pistol. Shaw was fatally shot in the back of the neck during the attack, and two other victims were injured, authorities said. The injured men recovered from their wounds, authorities said.

Fillyaw and Parker initially were found guilty of the charges in 2009, but a state appeals court overturned the convictions two years later because of trial errors.

They were retried in January during a rare double-jury trial when evidence was presented simultaneously to two separate juries, one for each defendant.

Previously, Fillyaw and Parker were each sentenced to 55 years for Shaw's murder and an additional 20-year sentence for the attempted murder convictions.

They each received about eight years of credit for time already served in prison, Koehl said.
