Generations at Risk: Four-part series about the effects of poverty on education, starts Monday

What if the way we've been judging schools in Illinois for years is wrong?

Every year when school report card data comes out, the top schools - or the schools with the highest test scores - are recognized.

But that doesn't tell the whole story.

In Illinois, more than 1 million students were classified as low-income last year. That's more than half of all public school students in the state.

That's why on Monday the Daily Herald, in collaboration with WBEZ, will debut a four-part series that offers a new way of looking at schools: through the lens of income.

Read the Daily Herald and WBEZ next week and tune in to WBEZ's "Morning Shift" at 9 a.m. Monday, 91.5-FM, for an important series to our suburbs and our state: "Generations At Risk."
