Schaumburg fishing derby a family affair

Nearly 80 families participated in the Father's Day weekend Fishing Derby Saturday at Volkening Lake in Schaumburg.

While the weather was comfortable, the fish just weren't biting, some participants lamented.

"There's no fish, hardly," said 9-year-old Ethan, who waited two hours for a nibble with his parents, Susan and David Goldwater of Schaumburg.

"We come every year, and at least he gets two or three," Susan Goldwater said. The pleasant weather made it "a nice day to fish," she said.

The derby, organized by Schaumburg Park District, included various prizes for different age groups and categories, though Eric Daudelin of Schaumburg didn't think he was going to get any catches worthy of claiming them.

"I don't think anyone is having any luck right now," said Daudelin, who was there with his wife and two children, and his father.

For the Radons family, the weekend event is a Father's Day tradition.

Markus Radons, of Schaumburg, said he has been bringing his daughters, Nele, 15, and Emma, 10, for six years. They were lucky enough to catch and release a bullhead and a catfish. "This day is fantastic. We don't even need sunscreen," Radons said.
