Metra, CTA adding extra routes for Blackhawks parade, but expect delays

Metra and CTA officials say they've added routes to accommodate the crush of fans heading downtown for the Chicago Blackhawks rally but that commuters should still expect delays.

Metra Executive Director Don Orseno said that they've added extra trains but given that thousands of paradegoers will converge on Union Station at one time just prior to the 10 a.m. parade start, there will be challenges.

"Trains may be late and overcrowded," Orseno said. "We're asking our customers to have some patience and understanding. We all want to celebrate - just do it safely."

Trains will be delayed by at least 10 minutes or so, officials said.

A $5 special event ticket is available for Metra travel all day systemwide. Quiet car rules won't be in effect, and alcohol and bicycles are prohibited all day on trains.

CTA officials are also warning fans that trains and CTA buses may also be running late that to allow for plenty of travel time as a result of street closures, traffic congestion and reroutes.

CTA officials say rail service is the best way into the loop because multiple bus schedules will be affected by the parade route, which begins at Monroe and Jefferson streets and ends at Soldier Field.

Red and Blue subway lines and Brown, Purple, Green, Pink and Orange elevated lines are the best option for Blackhawks fans heading downtown for the parade and rally, officials said.

Fans are encouraged to load their Ventra cards prior to Thursday morning's commute to lessen lines at the ticket machines. They should also fold strollers prior to loading to save time.
