Dale on track for bright future at Illinois

The running career of Conant senior Zach Dale still has plenty of miles left at the collegiate level.

The Cougars' senior athlete of the year has signed a letter of intent to compete on the Illinois track and cross country team.

Dale is the back-to-back Mid-Suburban League cross country and 1600-meter run champion, and is an Indoor All-American in the 2-mile.

Dale was runner-up in the 2014 cross country state meet and fourth in 2013. In track, he placed third in the 1600-meter run this spring and fourth in 2013.

College softball

Davenport senior KC Dunne (Buffalo Grove) becomes the first player in Davenport program history to be selected to the First Team NAIA All-American list. She makes her second appearance on the NAIA All-American list after she was named second team last season.

Dunne led the team in many offensive categories, which were highlighted with a .458 batting average and 11 home runs this spring. She was also tied for the team lead in runs batted in with 52, while she was named the WHAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.

• Lewis University senior Justina Doll (Mundelein) was one of two student athletes chosen as a 2015 recipient of the NCAA Division II Degree Completion Award. The program helps student-athletes who have exhausted their athletic eligibility with tuition to complete their undergraduate degree.

Doll, a biology major, appeared in 154 games as an outfielder for the Lewis softball team from 2012-15.

She is a four-time Br. David Delahanty Award winner, given to Lewis student-athletes for academic excellence. And she will be named to her fourth Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference team later this month.

"Justina has worked extremely hard throughout her career and it's awesome to see her reap the benefits of her performance on the field and in the classroom," said Lewis softball coach Becky Pearl in a school press release.

A national committee selects the award winners based on academic performance, athletic achievement and involvement in campus and community activities.

Men's track

DePaul senior Matt Babicz (Prospect) threw a personal best in Austin, Tex. and will advance to the National Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore, in the shot put. Babicz tossed a best throw of 19.52 meters to place fourth. He will represent DePaul in the shot put at the University of Oregon in June. He needed to place in the top 12 to qualify.

Other highlights in Babicz's DePaul career: five-time Big East shot put champion; five-time national qualifier in the shot put; three-time All-American; 2014 Big East Field 'Athlete of the Meet' and Big East championship meet record holder in the shot put.

Baseball

Indiana junior third baseman Brian Wilhite (St. Viator) hit his stride in May, producing at least 1 hit in nine of the Hoosiers' last 11 games. Wilhite was 12-of-28, batting .429 with 7 RBI. Known also for his defense, he was unanimously voted to the Nashville Regional All-Tournament Team.

Women's track

Illinois Wesleyan junior Angela Hermann (Conant) ran on the 4x100 realay team that finished fifth (46.69) at the NCAA Divison II Outdoor Track championships in Canton, N.Y.

Hermann, a two-time All-American, also was also 12th nationally in the 100-meter dash ,

The Titans took fourth place as a team , their third-best outdoor finish in school histroy.

• North Central College sophomore Tori Cappoziello (Schaumburg) ran 1:02.95 for the 400-meter dash and 52.07 for the 4x100-meter relay outdoors. She placed fifth in the 800-meter run at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin outdoor championships. The Cardinals finished the season strong, placing sixth at the NCAA Division III outdoor championships.

• North Central sophomore Amanda Cortese (Hersey) ran 2:27.93 for the 800-meter run, as well as finishing fourth in the 5,000-meter run, fifth in the 1,500-meter run and seventh in the 10,000-meter run at the CCIW outdoor championships.

• North Central sophomore Yessenia Nunez (Hoffman Estates) set outdoor personal bests for 800 meters (2:44.47), 1,500 meters (5:21.94), 3,000 meters (11:26.36), 5,000 meters (19:44.47), and 10,000 meters (41:49.11).

Rugby

Arlington Stallions Rugby Club alumnus Kevin Lydon (Conant), representing Davenport University of Grand Rapids, was named to the All-Star squad of the Mid-South Conference of USA Rugby's 1A Collegiate Division.

This is the elite level of play offered to college sides across the country by USA Rugby.

The Mid-South Conference features three of USA Rugby's most successful collegiate programs in Davenport, Lindenwood and Life Universities.

Davenport reached the USA Rugby National Championship semi-final in 15-a-side play and were National Championship runners-up at the Olympic style (7-a-side) National Championship.

Lydon, a junior, was in his second year as Davenport's starting scrumhalf at both levels of play.

Fremd camp

The Fremd High School Youth boys basketball camp will be held June 15 to June 25 (Monday through Thursday from 9:15 a.m to 10:45 a.m). The two-week camp is for fifth through eighth graders. The camp is designed to improve basketball skills and develop fundamentals through instruction, drills and scrimmages.
