Traffic alert: Ramp closing on Route 25 at Jane Addams

Beginning this week, Route 25 commuters will get some unwanted variety in their routines with the closure of the ramp leading to the westbound Jane Addams Tollway (I-90).

The Illinois tollway is in the midst of widening I-90 and rebuilding the Route 25 bridge over the Jane Addams and four interchange ramps.

This week, the westbound ramp from north and south Route 25 in Elgin will close through late summer with detours at Route 31.

The ramp from Route 25 to westbound I-90 is narrow and won't accommodate construction vehicles, engineers said. The other ramps will stay open.

Northbound Route 25 drivers can detour north to Main Street, head west, then south on Route 31 to I-90.

Southbound drivers will continue south, then go west on Kimball Street and north on Route 31 to I-90.

Interchange work will wrap up in 2016.

This year, all Route 25 traffic has shifted to the northbound side of the bridge over I-90 as work continues on the southbound lanes.

Lane reductions are also continuing between Trout Park Boulevard and Brandt Drive.

The tollway also announced changes farther east at Lee Street in Des Plaines where a new bridge over I-90 is being built.

Next week, southbound vehicles will switch to the new southbound lanes of the bridge. Traffic will be held to one lane in each direction.
