More 'No Refusal' DUI patrols coming in Kane County

Thanks in large part to a blizzard, the first "No Refusal" DUI patrol in Kane County this year - on Super Bowl Sunday - netted only one arrest.

But Kane County State's Attorney Joe McMahon has emphasized that the success of the program is not measured by the sheer number of arrests. Rather, authorities want to change people's behavior and get them to call a cab or designate a driver when drinking.

With that goal in mind, McMahon said his office will hold at least one more "No Refusal" event in 2015.

"Maybe there will be three more this year," he added.

In the past, authorities have targeted dates where people are more likely to drink excessively: July 4, Labor Day and the day before Thanksgiving.

During a "No Refusal" event, prosecutors fan out to local police stations to help prepare a search warrant for an on-call judge in case a motorist arrested on charges of driving under the influence refuses a breath or chemical test. The search warrant authorizes a phlebotomist to take a blood sample. If the motorist still refuses, a felony charge of obstruction of justice can be filed.

Aurora police set roof record

Aurora police and support personnel recently raised $9,300 - a record for the department - in the "Cop on Top" fundraiser for Special Olympics Illinois.

As part of a statewide fundraising effort May 29, Aurora law enforcement officials climbed on to rooftops at four Dunkin' Donut locations.

Last year, Aurora police raised $17,600 for Special Olympics Illinois through a variety of fundraisers. They've tallied $13,000 so far this year.

Ask a lawyer

The Kane County Bar Association will host its next "Ask A Lawyer Day" Saturday.

From 9 a.m. to noon, people can call (630) 762-1900 to consult with an attorney.

Supported by the Illinois State Bar Assocation, the free service features volunteer attorneys who have experience ranging from traffic and family law to wills and bankruptcy.

There is a high call volume so keep trying if the lines are busy.
