Lake County cops partner with donut chain to raise money for Special Olympics

The donut hole drop was a highlight of the Vernon Hills' Cops on Rooftop event Friday at the Dunkin' Donuts in the Hawthorn Hills Shopping Center.

With a $5 or more donation to the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, patrons picked an officer to catch a donut hole dropped from the roof. A coupon for a free donut was given for a donation of any amount.

Vernon Hills Police Chief Mark Fleischhauer said Friday's turnout has been far better than last year.

“Part of that is due to the great advertising that everyone has donated, the attention that Special Olympics gets and the amount of people out here volunteering and working,” Fleischhauer said.

The department had around 30 members at the event and hoped to surpass last year's donations of $1,750. The department has raised more than $8,850 in the past seven years.

About 20 Lake County police departments participated at other Dunkin' Donuts locations. In Wauconda, Police Chief Patrick Yost was joined on the roof by fellow officers and his 12-year-old daughter, Margaret.

In 2014, the statewide Cops on Rooftop event raised more than $430,000 for Special Olympics.
