Batavia upsets Waubonsie Valley
Batavia (19-16) scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to upset Waubonsie Valley 4-2 Wednesday in the Class 4A Oswego softball regional.
The 14th-seeded Bulldogs will play either No. 6 Naperville Central or No. 12 Oswego for the regional championship at 11 a.m. Saturday.
There's a title chance the title game could be moved to Friday because of forecasted bad weather on Saturday, according to Batavia coach Lupe Castellanos.
"It's a huge win for us," Castellanos said. "It gives us a lot of confidence. I thought we had the potential to compete with the good teams. Today we lived up to the potential we had."
Rachael Lovestrand pitched a complete game, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs. She struck out four and walked just one.
Elyse Burns went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Ryanne Rokos was 2-for-4.
"Rachael pitched a great game and our defense did an awesome job behind her," Castellanos said.
Burns came up with one of those defensive plays, turning a double play at shortstop to get out of the sixth inning after the Warriors had runners at first and second with 1 out.
"Huge momentum play," Castellanos said.
With Rokos on first in the top of the seventh, Burns ripped a double over the right fielder's head. Rokos scored on the play, and Burns also came in when the relay throw got away from the catcher.
The Warriors put a runner at first on an error in the bottom of the seventh before Lovestrand retired the next three hitters to finish the upset.
