Young athletes to compete in Youth triathlon

The 15th annual Multisport Madness Triathlon Team Youth Triathlon, supported by Northwestern Medicine, will be held Sunday, May 24, at the Cadence Fitness & Health Center, 296 Randall Road, Geneva.

This race is designed for all levels, from the beginner athlete looking to tackle his or her first triathlon to the experienced triathlete.

In addition to offering normal distances for kids ages 6 to 16, the Youth Triathlon includes a "Youth F-1 Elite" wave in order to give some of the top 12- to 16-year-old athletes in the region the opportunity to compete in a draft-legal race that is similar to the national competitions offered at five races across the United States.

This is one of the only a few draft-legal races for youth athletes in the region and contains some of the rising stars of the sport. More than a thousand youth have been exposed to the sport of triathlon through this event and there are several currently racing as professional triathletes.

The race is split into three divisions:

• Juniors, ages 6 to 10: 125-meter swim, two-mile bike, half-mile run.

• Seniors, ages 11 to 16: 125-meter swim, five-mile bike, one-mile run.

• Elite, Previous draft legal or sprint distance experience required: 375-meter swim, 6.2-mile bike, 1.55-mile run.

The Junior Race will begin at 7 a.m. The senior race will follow once all the junior racers have completed the bike course. The Elites will go off after the seniors have completed the bike course.

Registration can be done online at register.itsracetime.com/Register/?event=30347. Entry fee is $47.

Race packets can be picked up from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 23, at the Cadence Fitness & Health Center.
