Burlington Central survives in OT

The last momentum swing went Burlington Central's way.

After wasting a 2-goal, second-half lead, the Rockets dominated overtime for a 4-3 victory against DeKalb in the semifinals of the Class 2A Sycamore girls soccer regional Wednesday afternoon.

Elizabeth Gousios scored less than 3 minutes into the first extra session and the Rockets held on for the win.

Jordan King scored twice and Megan Majewski added a goal for the Rockets (19-2), who were all the more motivated after blowing the late lead.

"We've had two other overtimes where we've won," said Central coach Jessica Arneson. "They were so hungry for this; they really wanted it."

The Rockets advance to the regional championship match at 4:30 p.m. Friday against the host Spartans.

Central led 3-1 for much of the second half, but the Barbs scored twice in a span of just over 4 minutes to tie it and seize the momentum. Kayley Garland scored with 17:56 left in regulation. Leah Fassig then got the tying goal with 13:45 left.

King and Majewski scored in the first half to give the Rockets a 2-1 lead at the break. Majewski's goal came on a shot from about 40 yards out on the right side that sailed in over the goalkeeper's outstretched arms.

King tallied her second goal just after the intermission, sailing another long shot over the keeper.

Freshmen scored all 4 of the Rockets' goals.

"(The freshmen) have got a support staff from the seniors in back of them," said Arneson. "It's creating an environment where the seniors have to support the freshmen."
