Girls soccer: Lake County roundup

Jill Steinbrink scored twice, as Stevenson's girls soccer team opened the state tournament by edging No. 12 Glenbrook North 4-3 in penalty kicks Tuesday night.

The seventh-seeded Patriots prevailed 1-0 in kicks after a pair of 10-minute overtimes. Stevenson led 3-1 at halftime.

Savannah Kruse also scored for Stevenson and assisted on Steinbrink's first goal. Caroline Dempsey had a pair of assists for the Patriots, who will play No. 2 Lake Zurich in Friday's Class 3A regional final.

Stevenson keeper Hannah Petrich had 12 saves, including three in penalty kicks.

Grant 1, McHenry 0: At Cary-Grove, the Bulldogs won the Class 3A regional semifinal, as Marissa Allen scored the only goal.

Allen received a pass in the first half from Meghan Murray and drove the ball from 25 yards out into the far corner. Lexi Werve earned the shutout with 9 saves.

It was Grant's first regional semifinal win in 11 years. The Bulldogs take on top-seeded Cary-Grove, a 7-0 winner over Round Lake, at 6 p.m. Friday.

Lakes 6, Von Steuben 0: At Lake Forest, Nicole D'Ambrose had 2 goals and an assist, and Nicole Nitti also scored twice, as the fifth-seeded Eagles dispatched the No. 12 seed.

Maya Schmitt and Gretchen Metzger also scored for Lakes (13-4-3), while Bella Pighini had 2 assists. Kara Jones earned her 11th shutout of the season.

Antioch 5, Vernon Hills 4 (PKs): At Grayslake North, Courtney Coleman scored 3 goals for the 10th-seeded Sequoits, who prevailed 5-4 in penalty kicks.

Lauren Slack also scored in regulation for Antioch. Mikayla Abbeduto, Haley Capek and Kayla Vazquez had assists for Antioch. Sequoits keeper Monica Wilhelm made 9 saves, including the fifth Vernon Hills penalty kick. Slack buried Antioch's fifth PK for the win.

Grayslake North 9, CICS/Northtown 0: At Grayslake North, the No. 2 seed and host school rolled in its Class 2A regional semifinal.

Teagan Johnson scored 3 goals for Grayslake North (18-3-2), while Sammie Villwock netted a pair. Cammy Cowperthwaite had a goal and 3 assists. Jocelyn Rodriguez contributed a goal and 2 assists. Morgan Lyon and Maddie Wilkinson also scored. Lauren Davis assisted on the Knights' first two goals.

Megan Davis and Abby Rice shared the shutout in goal.

Warren 1, Fremd 0: At Fremd, Kaitlyn Chomko scored on an assist from Abby Vrabel in the second half, as the ninth-seeded Blue Devils ousted the eighth-seeded Vikings.

Warren goalie Liz Carrano had 6 saves in earning the shutout. Warren (12-7-2) will play top-seeded Barrington in the Class 3A regional final.
