Hoffman school collects $4,000 in pennies to fight leukemia

For the ninth consecutive year, students at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, Hoffman Estates, raised money to donate to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through the school's annual "Pennies for Patients" fundraiser. Through a combination of activities, this effort raised $4,065.32, which was $615 more than last year.

Thomas Jefferson's student council sponsored this fundraiser and planned fun and creative ways to encourage participation. There was a dance-a-thon, a "future me" dress-up day, and a chance to eat an Olive Garden lunch for donating boxes of coins.

Students also donated money to vote for which teachers would dye their hair orange, which is the color representing leukemia. The winning teachers' classes also joined in the fun by dressing in orange and parading around the school.

Students and teachers could also donate money to deliver a heart with chocolate kisses to special friends on Valentine's Day.

"All of these activities made for an exciting couple of weeks as students and families joined together to support a cause that touches the hearts of so many," said Alessandra Kennedy and Mary Beth Landerman, the sponsors of Thomas Jefferson's student council.
