Workers accidentally cut phone, Internet service to Geneva schools

A construction crew working on a traffic signal in Geneva cut a fiber-optic cable Wednesday morning disrupting phone and Internet service to several schools, city officials said.

Geneva Middle School North, Geneva Middle School South, Friendship Station Preschool and Fabyan Elementary School were affected by the incident, which happened near Randall Road and Christina Lane, officials said.

A news release from Geneva Unit District 304 administrators said the school districts will be using mobile hot spots to adapt and prevent any loss of meaningful instruction.

"Rest assured that all of our administrators have access to mobile phones and an emergency landline in case of an emergency at school," the news release said.

In the meantime, the main office phone numbers for each of the schools will be rerouted to the district office, where the staff will answer questions or transfer calls to cellphones as needed.
