Landry's 4 goals lift Geneva past Rosary

It was fitting that Geneva senior captain Mary Landry stole the show with a highlight reel first-half performance on Senior Night against Rosary.

Displaying a deft touch around the net and benefiting from sharp passes from her teammates, Landry tallied four goals in the first 35 minutes as the Vikings cruised to a 6-0 nonconference victory Thursday at Burgess Field.

Senior Megan Albrecht assisted on two of Landry's goals and tacked on the final goal late in the second half. Senior Riley Sanders also notched a second half goal off senior Quincy Swanson's well-placed corner kick.

"I was hoping for maybe one goal tonight, but I certainly wasn't expecting four," Landry said. "It wasn't all me. I definitely give credit to a lot of the assists."

"It was an awesome experience out there," added Megan Albrecht. "It was a lot of fun tonight and it felt good to get a win."

Landry gave Geneva (8-9-2) the lead 12 minutes in, tapping in a loose ball after a Rosary misplay on the back end. Landry struck again at the 26-minute mark on a pass from Megan Newingham.

The Vikings executed to perfection on their third goal as Megan Fitz started a breakout a midfield with a perfect touch to Albrecht on the left side, who found Landry open in the middle for the pretty goal.

"We're trying to work on keeping the ball on the ground and playing the feet and passing around people," Megan Albrecht said. "I think it definitely works for us up top. We definitely get the goals when we're able to connect and put the ball at the feet."

Holding a 4-0 lead, the Viking seniors enjoyed halftime festivities with their parents before heavy rains came early in the second half.

"We try to make it a special night for the seniors and create lasting memories for them," said Vikings coach Megan Owens.

Rosary (6-7-1) created some long range chances from Julianne Hutchison, Maria Witte, and Quincy Kellett, but Vikings freshman keeper Carrie Ostergard made 5 saves for the shutout.

"Geneva's the best team we've faced all year. They have strength, size and speed," credited Rosary coach Brian Frank. "We did regroup at halftime and I thought we played much better in the second half."
