Des Plaines man charged with accidentally shooting teen in Skokie

A Des Plaines man remains in custody on $350,000 bail after appearing in court Tuesday on charges he shot an 18-year-old Niles woman over the weekend in Skokie.

Darious R. Broom, 23, of the 900 block of Knight Avenue, faces a charge of aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony, stemming the from the shooting on the 4700 block of Main Street, according to Skokie police.

Police responded to a report that a woman had been shot at 10:24 p.m. Friday. When officers arrived, they discovered an 18-year-old female with gunshot wounds to the wrist and chest.

Police said an investigation revealed that Broom and the victim were acquaintances. Broom had removed a 9-millimeter semiautomatic handgun from his waistband and was “showing off” the weapon when it discharged, striking the victim, police said.

The woman was taken to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said. She has since been released.

Broom, who would face six to 30 years in prison if found guilty, is scheduled to return to court May 29. Skokie police said they will be seeking an indictment on additional charges when Broom's case goes before a grand jury.
