Readers donate car-full of pots, pans to refugee effort

Skillets, soup pots, casserole dishes, whisks, roasting pans and muffin tins along with other cookware and kitchen items filled all but the driver's seat of Emily Terrell's Toyota Rav4 Tuesday morning.

Terrell, new arrivals volunteer coordinator with World Relief DuPage/Aurora, picked up the items from the Daily Herald's Arlington Heights office. The donations are the fruits of the newspaper's three-week effort to collect items for the organization's Well Loved Pots and Pans Exchange. The program encouraged readers to donate used but usable cookware in return for 20 percent off new cookware purchased at Marcel's Culinary Experience in Glen Ellyn.

"It has been such a blessing to be able to be generous with pots and pans as I'm setting up apartments for newly arriving families," Terrell said. World Relief assists refugees settling in the Western suburbs by helping them find apartments and jobs and providing counseling, legal and educational services.
