Glenbard East seniors lead the way past Glenbard South

Glenbard East honored 10 seniors who have played a big part in the girls soccer program on Monday. The Rams topped off the night with a 4-0 victory over Glenbard South.

The 10 seniors have combined for 508 varsity matches, and six girls will move on to play at the next level, something coach Kent Overbey is extremely proud of.

"To have 10 seniors that all play minutes, it's incredible," Overbey said. "This group we've known since they came in that they were going to be a special group. … Just to be able to put those (matches) together, it's incredible."

The Rams (9-9-2) put a goal on the scoreboard just eight minutes into the match. A deflected through ball found the feet of senior Jessica Whipple, who found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Despite the lead it wasn't typical Glenbard East soccer.

The Rams were settling for shots from distance, resulting in relatively easy saves from Glenbard South goalkeeper Allison Jordan, who totaled 18 on the night. Glenbard East also held onto the ball, allowing the Raiders (5-7-1) to track runners and cut out the final pass.

In the second half a poor clearance from Glenbard South allowed senior Jordyn Fulton an easy finish for the second goal, but it was the two goals after that had the brand of soccer that the Rams like to play.

"We came out with what we call our swagger back," Fulton said. "That's how we get when we play with intensity, we did our one-, two-touch passes which really helped us in the game cause when we get back to conference play tomorrow, we're going to need it."

With 17 minutes left to play, one-touch passing from Holly Ward and Sammie Sarles helped spring a wide-open Brittany Paganucci on the left side for the third goal.

"We got in a little bit more," Overbey said. "Got in on them. We had been hammering a little bit to shoot more. It's like we're waiting for the perfect ball at 12 yards out, but that's not going to happen especially against a lot of the teams we play."

Paganucci then continued her work down the left for the fourth goal with six minutes left to play, beating her defender with a nice move and setting up an easy one-touch goal for sophomore Dana Plotke.

"Really, all four goals came through our flanks, so they did a good job capitalizing on mistakes we made back there," said Glenbard South coach Glen Eggert. "That's going to cost you."
