Hike Bluff Spring Fen with the Ikes May 5

On Tuesday, May 5, join the Elgin chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America in a hike at the Bluff Spring Fen on Elgin's far southeast side.

The hike will be led by Tom Stewart, a retired Kane County Forest Preserve Ranger.

Meet at 6:30 p.m. at the parking lot of the Izaak Walton League's parking lot at 899 Jay St. to carpool to the fen as parking there is very limited.

The fen, a 160-acre Illinois Nature Preserve, is located next to the scenic Bluff City Cemetery. Wear appropriate footwear for trail hiking.

The Bluff Spring Fen centers on a warm-water spring (50 degrees) that runs year-round and supports a rare ecology of plants and animals. The topography is varied, including prairie, glacial kames, and stands of burr oak as well as the spring stream. To learn more about the fen, visit fpdcc.com/bluff-spring-fen/.

The Izaak Walton League is a conservation group with chapters all over the United States.

The Elgin area meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. Guests are always welcome. Call (847) 867-9393 for information.
