Six seriously injured in Elgin hit-and-run accident

Elgin police are seeking the driver of a vehicle they believe was the cause of a multivehicle crash Friday evening that seriously injured six people.

About 9:37 p.m., Elgin police and fire departments responded to the area of Seneca and Spring streets for a report of a hit-and-run crash.

The investigation indicates the driver a 2008 Jeep Laredo was speeding while heading east on Seneca Street and then disregarded the stop sign at Spring Street, police said in a news release. The vehicle was then struck by a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban, which was traveling north on Spring Street. The Jeep continued down Seneca Street, where it struck a 1993 Buick LeSabre with five people inside. That vehicle, which had just parked was pushed into two unoccupied parked vehicles, police said. The driver of the Jeep fled on foot.

The driver of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban and all five people in the 1993 Buick LeSabre were taken to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital with injuries that were serious but not life threatening.

The Elgin Police Department Traffic Unit is conducting the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call (847) 289-2661, or text 847411 and include ELGINPD in the beginning of the text, along with the message and/or tip information.
