DeKalb man killed in Aurora crash, wife seriously injured

A DeKalb man died and his wife was critically injured after a driver lost control of his vehicle and struck their vehicle Friday evening on Aurora's far east side, police said.

The crash happened at about 6 p.m. at Eola Road about 100 feet north of Prospect Drive. Shayan U. Farooqi, 21, of Aurora told police he lost control of his vehicle, which was heading south on Eola, after experiencing what he believed were mechanical issues, police said in a news release. The vehicle, a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder, crossed the median and hit a northbound 2009 Honda Fit on the driver's side.

The driver of that vehicle, Eddie D. Bermea, 34, was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, Joyce, was critically injured.

Farooqi, who had injuries that weren't life threatening, and Joyce Bermea were transported to separate hospitals.

Police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. Eola Road was closed for five and a half hours after the crash.
