People's Resource Center volunteer laces up for Human Race

Need some motivation to get outside this spring and do some running or walking? Here it is: the fourth annual Human Race on Saturday, April 25.

After being stuck inside for most of the winter and running on a treadmill, I love getting outside to run on the Prairie Path and Great Western Trail; having a charity race on my calendar keeps me extra motivated. This will be my first 5K race of 2015 and my first time running the Human Race, so I'm really looking forward to it. I even convinced my husband to sign up.

But you don't have to be a runner to participate. In addition to the 5K timed race, there is also a 2-mile fitness walk. Bring your kids (strollers are allowed) or even your dog and enjoy the day and the company of other people getting out for this event. It's a great way to start a weekend - you get some exercise and support a great cause at the same time.

The Human Race is a community event and fundraiser that benefits more than 50 nonprofit organizations serving DuPage County including my favorite - People's Resource Center. I am a volunteer for PRC and am so impressed by the many programs offered and the number of people helped on a daily basis. When you register for the race as a member of Team PRC, a portion of the entry fee goes to PRC. You also can support PRC by making a donation on the Team PRC webpage, tinyurl.com/peoplesrc2015.

Hope to see you at the race!

People's Resource Center

Founded in 1975, the People's Resource Center helps people in need in DuPage County weather tight financial times and develop the resources to take steps toward surer financial ground.

The organization offers a food pantry and clothes closet to provide basic needs for families who need help, as well as emergency financial assistance to help with mortgage, rent, utilities and other expenses when money is short.

Learning and literacy classes help adults learn English, earn a high school equivalency degree, prepare for citizenship or improve math and literacy skills. Adults also can learn computer skills and take home a refurbished computer.

A job assistance program provides referrals and mentoring through the search process. Clients also can find connections to other organizations that can provide help beyond what the PRC offers.

The People's Resource Center is a 501(c)3 organization based in Wheaton with a satellite location in Westmont. To learn more, visit peoplesrc.org or call (630) 682-5402.
