College of DuPage Offers New 'Citizens Public Safety Academy' this Summer

The Homeland Security Training Institute at College of DuPage is offering a new Citizens Public Safety Academy designed to provide participants with the opportunity to become more aware of and involved with their own safety.

Classes will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. on Tuesdays from June 2 to July 21, in the Homeland Security Education Center, Room 2029B, on the College's main campus, 425 Fawell Blvd., in Glen Ellyn. While this program is free and open to the public, enrollment is limited to 25 participants aged 18 or older. A background check is required from all participants and registration is required. Participants must register by Thursday, April 30.

"This is the first time College of DuPage has offered a Citizens Public Safety Academy and we could not be more excited to introduce and educate citizens about the world of public safety," said Associate Dean/Director of Homeland Security Tom Brady. "Covering topics such as crime prevention, current frauds and scams, disaster response, fire safety, and firearm safety, we aim to help members of the community to better protect themselves by becoming familiar with potential crimes, learning to recognize and report threats and gaining an understanding of how emergency response and law enforcement agencies work together to provide security, protection and care to the public."

During this program, funded through a grant provided by the Motorola Solutions Foundation, participants will learn about a broad range of topics presented by esteemed law enforcement and emergency response experts from a variety of organizations, including the College of DuPage Police Department, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Milton Township CERT program, the Naperville Police Department, the Naperville Fire Department and the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy. In addition, participants will take part in interactive learning activities including a state-of-the-art firearm safety decision-making simulator, view a K9 unit demonstration and witness a crime investigation scenario.
