District 89 nurse honored

Glen Ellyn Elementary District 89's Educator of the Year has dedicated her time to helping both students and staff in her district.

District Nurse Sandy Lawinger received the educator award for her district, nominated by Superintendent John Perdue. Teachers from Glen Ellyn Elementary District 41 and Glenbard High School District 87 also were recognized.

Perdue said there are numerous reasons Lawinger deserves the award.

The nurse has stood out with the work she has done on staff wellness, with accomplishments including spearheading a comprehensive staff wellness event this year and helping out with the Biggest Loser fitness challenge for staff, he said. She also sponsors a staff effort to contribute to students who have life-threatening illnesses.

"Those are a few of the reasons why she stands out as … an employee of the year this year," Perdue said. "It's all underpinned by a belief that if our staff are not in healthy orientations and places in their lives, then the work they do with our students will be less than effective."
