$300,000 bail for man accused of leaving child in forest preserve

A Round Lake man who authorities say abandoned his 3-year-old daughter in a Prospect Heights-area forest preserve was ordered held on $300,000 bail Wednesday.

Faiz Ikramulla, 35, faces aggravated kidnapping charges that carry a maximum prison sentence of 30 years upon conviction.

The girl was found wandering alone at about 6:30 p.m. April 7 along Milwaukee Avenue near the Allison Woods Forest Preserve. Authorities say Ikramulla took his daughter from their home earlier that day, drove her to the forest preserve and left her there. The girl told Illinois Department of Children and Family Services representatives that her father put her in a trash can, according to DCFS spokeswoman Veronica Resa.

The girl, who was not injured, remains in the custody of her mother, who has not been charged in the case.

The mother filed for an order of protection against her husband April 9 in the Lake County circuit court clerk's office.

The order forbids Faiz Ikramulla from coming within 500 feet of his wife's home or his daughter's school. Collins also ordered that he have no contact with his daughter.

The order expires April 30 but may be extended by Lake County Judge Raymond Collins, who will preside over the hearing on that day.

Ikramulla's wife said he picked their daughter up from school about 5:45 p.m. April 7 and did not say when they would return home. After her husband did not return repeated calls, she called Round Lake police about 10 p.m. to report her daughter missing, authorities said.

Faiz Ikramulla was arrested in Van Buren County, Michigan, on April 9 and extradited to Illinois.

An article in the Northwest Times of Indiana indicated Faiz Ikramulla had been charged with battery to police officers following a 2014 traffic stop. In the article, Faiz Ikramulla's attorney stated his client had been experiencing mental health problems including anxiety and panic attacks around the time of the 2014 incident.

Ikramulla remains at Cook County jail, where he will undergo medical evaluation, authorities say.

He next appears in court on May 5.
