Still time to vote; polls close at 7 p.m.

Polls are set to close at 7 p.m. in the election to pick local officials across the suburbs, giving would-be voters a chance to boost turnout and cast a ballot on the way home from work.

Suburban election officials say voting is going smoothly so far.

Cook County spokeswoman Courtney Greve said early numbers show "extremely low turnout at this point."

She said there would need to be an after-work rush at the polls to catch up to 2011's 17 percent turnout numbers countywide.

Earlier in the day, Lake County Clerk Carla Wyckoff also said voting was going smoothly.

"I think that turnout is a little bit light so far," Wyckoff said.

DuPage and Kane counties haven't reported problems, either.

Turnout for local elections tends to be lower than in contests for president or governor, and the race for mayor of Chicago has dominated much of the political energy in the area recently.

If you have problems voting, you can call your county office or the Illinois State Board of Elections at (312) 814-6440 or (217) 782-4141.
