Protest planned in Waukegan teen's shooting death by Zion police
A march and rally protesting the police shooting death of a Waukegan teen in Zion has been scheduled for Saturday, according to a community activist.
The march will begin at 2 p.m. at 24th Street and Galilee Avenue and go to the Zion police station at 2101 Salem Blvd., Zion activist Clyde McLemore said. A news conference will be staged at the police building, he said.
The theme of the protest is justice for Zion, McLemore said.
The kickoff point for the protest is near where 17-year-old Justus Howell was shot to death this past weekend after a foot chase.
Authorities said Howell tried to steal a handgun from another teen and then ran from police. An officer shot Howell twice in the back, killing him, the Lake County coroner's office has said.
Visitation for Howell is set for 10 a.m. Friday at First Corinthians Missionary Baptist Church, 1529 Elizabeth Ave., North Chicago, McLemore said. A funeral will follow at 11 a.m. at the church.
