Bauch an all-around success for Illinois softball team

In the Illinois softball media guide, junior Allie Bauch lists her dream job as becoming a high school math teacher while coaching three sports.

If anyone could do it, it's Bauch.

She was a three-sport athlete at Conant who earned 10 varsity letters while playing basketball, softball and volleyball and also excelling in the classroom.

She is doing the same at Illinois, where she recently earned her first career Big Ten softball player of the week award after leading the conference with a .714 batting average and a .765 on-base percentage for the week.

The second baseman went 10-for-14 with 3 doubles, a home run and 8 runs, as well as 3 walks and a stolen base. Bauch reached base at least three times in all four games.

She scored in every game, including going 4-for-5 with 2 doubles, 3 runs, a stolen base and the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh in the second game against Indiana.

Bauch kicked off the week by going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run against No. 20 Missouri, before leading the Illini to the Indiana sweep.

Batting lead off, Bauch jump started the Illini offense by reaching base in all 10 of her leadoff opportunities for the week.

A 2014 NFCA All-Region selection, Bauch took home her second career weekly honor. She was Big Ten freshman of the week on April 20, 2013.

Baseball

Illinois Wesleyan sophomore infielder Jarrod Juskiewicz (Palatine) was named a co-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin player of the week.

He helped lead the Titans to a 3-0 record in their CCIW opener against Elmhurst, batting .636 (7-for-11) with 3 runs, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 4 RBI and a 1.091 slugging percentage.

Juskiewicz was 3-for-4 with a run and a triple in a 1-0 win in Game 1. In Game 2, he finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double in a 9-5 win. He wrapped up the series by going 2-for-3 with 2 runs, 2 doubles and 2 RBI in a 17-7 win.

Men's Lacrosse

Illinois Wesleyan freshman infielder Nick Winter (St. Viator) was named a co-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin men's player of the week.

Winter totaled 8 goals and 8 assists as the Titans went 2-0 last week. He finished with 3 goals and 6 assists in a 20-3 win over Cornell and followed with 5 goals, 2 assists and 2 ground balls in a 15-11 win over Hope which was the Titans' fourth-straight victory.

Softball

Missouri-St. Louis sophomore center fielder Sara Kern (Wheeling) was 3-for-3 in the second game of a doubleheader against Wisconsin-Parkside.

Missouri-St. Louis is ranked third in the 2015 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Top 25 Poll.

The Tritons have gotten off to a 25-3 start and 6-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

They have a total of 58 home runs in 28 games.

• Illinois Wesleyan sophomore first baseman Sarah Platt (Hersey) recently helped her softball team get off to an 8-1 start at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla.

Platt batted .333 with a .500 slugging percentage. She hit 3 doubles and drove in 6 runs. Her team is currently ranked No. 6 nationally.

Platt was recognized as an NCAA Division III All-America Scholar Athlete for 2014.

Kyrsten Becker honored

Former Rolling Meadows standout Kyrsten Becker, who enters her fifth season as a member of the Morehead State volleyball staff and fourth campaign as an assistant coach, has been tabbed by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as one of the nation's top 30 coaches under the age of 30.

"Congratulations to Kyrsten on this terrific honor," coach Jaime Gordon said on the school's website. "She is a great representative of our volleyball program, athletic department and university. Kyrsten's coaching future is very bright. She has accomplished a lot in our profession at a relatively young age."

Becker joined the Eagle volleyball program as its director of operations in 2011. She was promoted to an assistant coach in 2012 and added the title of recruiting coordinator in 2013. Becker oversees the team's academic progress, focuses on marketing via social media and assists with camps.

"Kyrsten continues to take on a lot of responsibility," Gordon said. "Recruiting is the lifeblood of any program, and she works really hard in that area. Kyrsten relates well to our student-athletes and staff. She also does a great job with our social media platforms and external communications."

With Becker on staff, Morehead State went 50-2 (. 962) in Ohio Valley Conference matches from 2011-13 en route to three consecutive regular-season league championships. The Eagles captured conference tournament titles in 2011 and 2013 on their way to NCAA Tournament appearances.

Becker came to Morehead State after a four-year playing career at St. Francis. The outside hitter was a three-time All-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference performer. A CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, Becker was also a two-time Daktronics NAIA Volleyball Scholar-Athlete.

Becker earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and secondary education from St. Francis in 2011. She attended the annual AVCA Convention in 2010 after being selected for one of the organization's eight 'Coaches 4 Coaches' scholarships.

Football

Six Barrington seniors have made official their college destinations: Scotty Miller (Bowling Green), Jason Harris (Illinois State), JT Henderson (Robert Morris), Jake Coon (Washington University, St. Louis), David Danhauer (St. Thomas) and Kyle Meckert (St. Norbert).

Rugby

The Arlington Stallions dropped their league opener at Morton West High School in a close match to the Morton Mustangs, 14-10.

The Stallions were unable to convert the significant possession and territorial advantage they held through most of the match into enough points to prevail over their longtime rival.

Stallions' tries were scored on a short powerful burst through three defenders by junior Spencer Krueger (Hersey) and an opportunistic tackle and steal by inside center Jon Toruimi (Buffalo Grove), also a junior.

Toruimi was the 'Man-of-the-Match'.

"Jon had a terrific day today by doing the dirty work of consistent tackling, ball-wining and turning defense into offense," said Stallions coach Paul Bergman. That's true to the way our club likes to play and despite this end result, it bodes well for our future matches this season."

The Stallions take on the two-time Tier-Two state champion Lake Forest Harriers on Saturday at the Busse Woods Forest Preserve at 10 a.m.
