May 18-19: Auditions for CLC summer musical, 'Working'

Community members are invited to audition for the College of Lake County summer musical, "Working," based on the book by the late Pulitzer Prize-winning Chicago author Studs Terkel.

Auditions will be held at 6:30 p.m. on May 18 and 19 in the Studio Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the CLC Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St.

To audition, actors should prepare a song from any version of "Working" and a two-minute monologue from any show. An accompanist will be provided. Director Thomas B. Mitchell is seeking cast members from ages 16-60. Call-backs will be held at 6:30 p.m. on May 21. Copies of the score and script are available for in-library viewing at the CLC Library circulation desk, Grayslake campus.

The musical will be presented by the CLC departments of music, theatre and dance on Friday and Saturday, July 17-19 and July 23-26 in the Studio Theatre.

"Working" was adapted by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso, with additional contributions by Gordon Greenberg; and songs by Craig Carnelia, Micki Grant, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mary Rodgers, Susan Birkenhead, Stephen Schwartz and James Taylor.

The musical draws from the stories of "ordinary" working people. This newly updated adaptation paints a vivid portrait of the men and women the world so often takes for granted: the mill worker, cubicle worker, waitress, fireman, housewife, delivery driver and the schoolteacher, to name a few. With a universal message and uplifting score, "Working" celebrates everyday people in a truly genuine, funny and touching way.
