Morrison's choices for districts 15, 211

For most suburban families, property taxes consume a greater percentage of the family budget than any other single tax. Two-thirds (or more) of property taxes are used to fund our elementary and secondary public schools.

It is especially important that voters get involved with the upcoming school board elections to make sure their views are well represented.

As a private citizen and parent, I've attended many school board meetings over the years and kept up with fiscal and policy decisions. After my election as state representative, I have shared with District 211 and 15 school board members the concerns of many constituents that property taxes continued to rise dramatically amid diminished property values and for many, a sharp decline in household income. Sadly, some members of each board have downplayed those concerns.

It is difficult to get candidates to run for these unpaid and very time-consuming positions, but an excellent school board can create a lasting, positive impact for students and the community-at-large.

For District 15, I am endorsing Manjula Sriram, Frank Annerino, and Gerard Iannuzzelli. For District 211, I am endorsing Pete Dombrowski. These four candidates - all parents and proven leaders - are the ones I believe will most effectively balance the needs of the schools with the needs of our community as a whole. They understand the issues. They will remain independent of special interests, and they will be wise stewards of tax dollars.

The education of our community's children, and the election of those tasked with providing oversight, is not to be taken lightly. Don't sit this one out. Election day is April 7 and early voting is now through April 4 at the Palatine Township Center.
