Sweeney's sweet swing lifts Barrington
Liz Sweeney picked the perfect time for her first hit in Wednesday's nonconference game at Prairie Ridge.
After 2 walks and a popout, the Barrington junior shortstop walloped a two-out, 2-run homer over the center field fence for the deciding runs in the Fillies' 4-2 win over the Wolves (1-2).
Barrington improved to 6-1, as did its senior pitcher Keenan Dolezal.
Rachel Macdonald (3-for-4, 2 runs) was on base when Sweeney hit the first pitch she saw in her final at-bat.
Junior Nicole Chapman was the Fillies' other multiple hitter, going 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.
It was Sweeney's third homer of the season and tenth for Barrington.
Buffalo Grove 4, Grant 0: Senior Julia Camardo (2-0) threw her second 1-hitter in as many days as the Bison improved to 2-0. Camardo struck out six and walked one.
Senior Caitlin Catino (2-for-4) and sophomore Grace Gran each doubled for the Bison who also got hits from Nikki Longdon, Olivia Morini, Katie Fontanetta and Emily Carnes, who had 2 RBI.
St. Charles East 6, Schaumburg 2: Elaine Walker (2-for-3) and Paige Alt each belted solo homers for Schaumburg (1-1). Kaiden Jackson, losing pitcher Shannon Felde (0-1), Sarah Schwind and Natalie Napier also had hits for the Saxons.
Stagg 6, Hoffman Estates 4: Mary Bean (2-for-4) and losing pitcher Charlotte Allan (2-for-3, walk) were multiple hitters for the host Hawks (4-2).
Freshman Giselle Velezquez (1-for-2, 2 walks), Brynn Connelly and Valerie Olsen also had hits for Hoffman.
Antioch 16, Palatine 3: Ellie Kozlowski (1-for-2, doubles, 1 run) and Maria Howell (1-for-2, home run) were offensive leaders for the host Pirates (2-2).
Marengo 9, Elk Grove 4: Visiting Marengo scored 7 runs in the third inning of the nonconference game. Haley Itzenthaler had the Grens only extra base hit with a double.
Niles North 3, Rolling Meadows 2: Sophomore Elizabeth Elkins (2-for-3) had a 2-run double for the host Mustangs (1-4), who also had hits from Lauren Hattory, sophomore Amanda Elkins (double) and junior Meghan Slowik.
"We played better defense than the day before (11-4 loss to Crystal Lake South)," said Meadows coach Tony Wolanski. "We just need a little more offense. Lydia (Schultz) pitched a better game. We're just going to keep trying to get better and learn from our mistakes."
