Volo woman faces federal charges in bank robbery case

A Volo woman is expected to appear in federal court Tuesday morning on federal charges of attempted bank robbery.

Teresa M. Knowles, 39, faces federal charges filed after the March 24 attempted robbery of the Chase Bank, 2911 Commerce Drive in Johnsburg, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney's office.

She's also suspected of robbing banks in Grayslake and Crystal Lake around the same time.

In the Johnsburg case, authorities said Knowles approached a teller with a note demanding money, but the teller refused, and Knowles left the bank. Police say they stopped her in a vehicle matching the description of the one used in the attempted robbery.

Knowles is also accused of robbing the Chase Bank at 975 E. Belvidere Road in Grayslake about 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, and she also is a suspect in a Crystal Lake robbery at 11:07 a.m. March 21, of the Chase Bank at 1185 S. Route 31, Crystal Lake Police Cmdr. Dan Dziewior said.

She faces additional felony burglary and felony unlawful possession or use of a registration plate, which authorities said was determined to have been stolen from Wisconsin.

Attempted bank robbery carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison, up to three years of supervised release following imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, and full restitution.

Knowles is expect in a federal courtroom at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Rockford.
