Hemmer's slam highlights Mundelein's win

Not in his three previous seasons as Mundelein's head coach nor two years as an assistant had Brett Wilhelm won a game in Barrington's annual softball quad.

That changed Saturday, as the Mustangs outslugged Elk Grove 15-8 behind Jamie Hemmer's grand slam and the relief pitching of freshman Breanna Adams.

Mundelein left Barrington's Fields of Dreams with a 4-1 overall record after losing to the host Fillies 7-0 in its second game.

Sophomore Jordyn West and freshman Kaitlyn Griffin also homered against Elk Grove. Maddie Zazas led the Mustangs' 17-hit attack with a 4-for-4 effort that included 2 doubles. Maggie Mahar was 3-for-4 with a double and triple, while Hemmer (double), Karlee Busscher (double) and Griffin added a pair of hits each for the Mustangs.

In her varsity debut, Adams pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Nicole Parney, who allowed 6 earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. Adams struck out one and did not walk a batter.

Barrington's Loyola-bound Keenan Dolezal shut down Mundelein on 2 hits, singles by Hannah Bulgart and Zazas. Dolezal struck out 13 batters.

The Fillies hit 3 home runs and took advantage of 5 Mustangs errors. Parney started in the circle again, before Adams threw the final 4 2/3 innings, allowing 1 earned run and 5 hits, while striking out four.

"I thought our pitchers did a very good job today," Wilhelm said. "Bre Adams came in and was very good."

Stevenson loses twice: At Barrington, the Patriots opened their season by losing to Barrington 10-5 and Elk Grove 14-8.

Kayleigh McGovern homered twice for Stevenson against Barrington.
