Woodland proposal has many benefits
While I appreciate the Daily Herald's coverage regarding Woodland's upcoming referendum in its article, "Higher Tax Cap could pay for A/C at Woodland School," it is important to acknowledge that air conditioning is just one part of this referendum.
Should the referendum pass, Woodland would receive funding for much-needed technology.
Fact: Woodland currently has a 6:1 ratio with regard to computer access. Neighboring school districts currently support a 1:1 ratio, including District 56. Warren Township High School will join this 1:1 ratio next year. Many classrooms at Woodland have one computer for teacher use.
In today's highly competitive and technology-rich environment, it is our responsibility to ensure that children have access to the tools necessary to ensure their success.
The second part of this referendum is funding for capital improvements that are needed but have been pushed off to ensure the district continues to maintain a balanced budget without incurring new debt.
Air quality and air conditioning are the final piece. Improved air quality will provide a healthier and safer learning environment for our children. Research has shown that reading speed and comprehension, as well as math performance, of schoolchildren is poorer when temperatures reach 81 degrees to 86 degrees F, relative to 68 degrees.
Temperatures in the primary school surpass 85 degrees during warm months.
Now is the time to invest in our children and our communities. Research shows that homebuyers list school quality as a deciding factor in the purchase of a home.
I have seen firsthand the dedication and passion that the administration and school board have for our children. Please join me on April 7 to vote "yes" so Woodland District 50 can continue to provide an exceptional education for our children and strengthen our community.
