Mount Prospect police release video of fatal hit-and-run crash

Mount Prospect police have released surveillance video showing the hit-and-run crash on Algonquin Road that took the life of an Arlington Heights man Sunday night.

The video shows the man, identified Tuesday as 46-year-old Jose Felix Gonzalez-Navarette, crossing Algonquin near its intersection with Briarwood Drive. The video cuts out moments before a dark-colored sedan driving east on Algonquin Road strikes Gonzalez-Navarette.

Mount Prospect Public Information Officer Greg Sill said it appears on the video that the man is walking against the traffic light, but police are not completely sure.

Police said they are still looking for the driver of the car, which drove away before first responders arrived at the scene at about 8:15 p.m. Sunday.

Gonzalez-Navarette was rushed to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined that he died from multiple injuries suffered in the crash, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Mount Prospect police are encouraging anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the driver or the car to call the police department's Major Accident Investigation Team at (847) 870-5656.

Additionally, people can make anonymous tips by calling Crime Stoppers at (847) 590-7867 or text their tip to 274637. Crime Stoppers will give a reward of up to $1,000 for any information leading to an arrest and prosecution.

The surveillance video was captured by a camera operated by a business called Auto Mart of Mount Prospect at 1881 W. Algonquin Road.
