Local Girl Scouts attend United Nations Commission on the Status of Women

Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois recently sent Girl Scouts Emily Bettler, 16, of South Elgin, Lindsay Schwartz, 18, of Kildeer, and Stefany Veldhuizen, 17, of Sycamore to participate as delegates in the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

The girls contributed to the Girl-Child assemblies and attended sessions presented by various government agencies that focused on issues specific to the country, including Turkey (Syrian conflict), Ukraine, the Nordic Countries, and Iran. The girls also attended conferences with noted advocates and speakers, including Hillary Clinton, Melinda Gates, and other influential women.

On March 9, the girls attended an event during the commission to discuss "The State of Girls: The Well-being of Girls in the United States," hosted by Girl Scouts of the USA.

During the week of International Women's Day, March 6-13, 15 Girl Scouts from six different Girl Scout councils participated as delegates in a variety of programs and events as part of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Girls spoke on panels, learned about the United Nations process, and engaged with United Nations delegates and entities.
