Charges yet to be filed in fatal hospital stabbing

A 42-year-old woman was stabbed to death by a 44-year-old male family member or friend while visiting a patient yesterday morning at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, according to police. Francisca Quintero, of Burlington, Wisconsin, was rushed to the hospital's emergency room but efforts to save her life failed and she was pronounced dead at 1:10 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. A winter weather advisory is in effect until noon today with 3 to 6 inches of snow expected. Periods of moderate to occasionally heavy accumulating snow will cause slick roads and make travel challenging. Temperatures climb above freezing by Monday afternoon. Full story.

State's attorney pledges to fight hate crimes against suburban Sikhs

Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez reached out to address the problem of hate crimes against the Sikh community by visiting the Sikh Religious Society of Chicago in Palatine yesterday. Alvarez told members she will seek the community's input for her recently formed Hate Crimes Advisory and Prosecution Council. “I also understand that the issue of hate crimes is a significant concern to your community and I want to emphasize my commitment to combating this issue as your state's attorney,” she said. Aurora man who broke legs in Starved Rock fall could face charges

Authorities say a man who broke both legs in a fall from a canyon ledge in Starved Rock State Park could face charges. Illinois Conservation Police Sgt. Robert Frazier tells the (LaSalle) News-Tribune that 18-year-old Christopher J. Stewart of Aurora climbed over a wooden railing, stepped off a walkway and jumped onto a rim along Wildcat Canyon on Friday. Frazier says Stewart was with two men older than 21 who were “highly intoxicated.” A 19-year-old Aurora woman with the group was charged with marijuana possession. Full story.

Kane public defender: ‘Innocent man' convicted in Geneva murder

A jury ruled that the 47-year-old Shadwick King strangled his wife in July 2014 and moved her body to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks to cover up his role in her death. Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress was too emotional to talk to reporters about her client's guilty verdict, but she is talking about it now. “It was a big disappointment. I have to say we really didn't expect that result,” Childress said two days after the verdict. “This is one where I have no doubt in my mind an innocent man was convicted.” Full story.

Traffic

Numerous crashes are being reported throughout the area as the snow hinders travel. A variety of issues were reported on area tollways. Two of four lanes were blocked on southbound I-294 south of Route 62. All lanes now are open on southbound I-94 south of Rand Road and on I-88 west of the 1-355 overpass. Hawks ticket prices up

The price of success for the Blackhawks will cost fans a little more next season. For the sixth straight season, the Blackhawks are raising ticket prices, this time by an average of 8 percent. The cost of a front-row seat on the glass will be $450 per game next season, or $19,800 for a season-ticket holder. Full story.

Sam Dekker scored 17 points to lead four Wisconsin players in double figures, and the No. 1-seeded Badgers and Benet Academy standout Frank Kaminsky are headed back to the Sweet 16 after defeating Oregon 72-65 in the NCAA Tournament last night. Full story.

Cubs, White Sox have work cut out for them

Both Cubs writer Bruce Miles and White Sox writer Scot Gregor are in agreement: Neither Chicago team enters the 2015 season as the top dog in their respective division. Miles writes in his column for Monday's paper that the St. Louis Cardinals, who have made it to the playoffs each of the last four years are the most likely to do so again. Gregor writes that the Detroit Tigers, who have won the Central the past four years, are most likely to repeat the task so long as their best sluggers, Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez, are healthy.
