Aaron Lawlor vs. Michael Nerheim in race to benefit two Lake Co. food pantries
The Piggly Wiggly store in Antioch was in a frenzy Friday as the Lake County Farm Bureau held its 17th annual Race for Hunger.
Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor and Lake County State's Attorney Michael Nerheim went head to head as they raced through the store and filled their shopping carts with the highest monetary value of nonperishable food items as they could in five minutes - all in the name of charity.
Nerheim's strategy: "I'm going to buy everything my wife doesn't let me buy when I go grocery shopping," he joked. "The key is to get expensive items."
Lawlor raced on behalf of Libertyville Township Food Pantry, while Nerheim's raced for St. Anastacia Food Pantry in Waukegan.
Lawlor was the winner with $1,349.28 in groceries, while Nehreim finished with $1,182.89 in groceries. The farm bureau picks up the tab for the groceries.
"The real winners today are the food pantries," said Greg Koeppen, Lake County Farm Bureau's executive director. "We're happy to donate the food to the pantries and help those less fortunate throughout Lake County."
