Important highlights on Women's Rights Day

I write to commend your coverage of International Women's Day and to raise publicity on advocating gender equality.

March 8 was recognized as International Women's day, which began in 1909 by the Socialist Party of America and aimed to provide women with a voice for change. In its Monday, March 9, issue, the Daily Herald reported on the "1,000 people [who] gathered" in New York City and marched for their political, economic, and social rights.

Despite historical milestones such as the 19th Amendment granting women's suffrage, gender inequality continues to exist today with women remaining at a disadvantage in politics, the workforce, and by cultural standards.

Women account for 50 percent of today's population, but are the minority in holding political office, are often paid less than men in the professional workforce, and are discouraged from participating in STEM fields.

Women are underrepresented in a predominantly male Congress when creating legislation regarding their bodies, and continue to fall victim in today's rape culture.

However, the media has been doing its part by recognizing the efforts of feminism and addressing the issue of gender inequality around the world. Leaders today have strengthened the cause, such as Emma Watson with her HeForShe campaign and Malala Yousafzay receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for defending girls' rights to education.

However, in order for our society to change, we need to talk, to educate, and to act. Last Sunday, both men and women stood united for the common cause of equality. International Women's Day observes not only a day of celebration and rally, but sets a reminder that we have the ability to make a change, regardless of age, culture, and gender.
