As a giant American flag waves on a large screen, soloist Katherine Damisch sings the National Anthem at the Northwest Suburban Republican Lincoln Day Dinner at The Meadows Club on February 12, 2015, in Rolling Meadows. I cropped this photograph to eliminate the screen's frame and the rest of the people on the stage, to make Damisch really standout. Because Damisch was looking up I also placed her at the bottom right of the photograph instead of the center to give the image a unquiet look.   As I look back on this winter, despite some very cold and snowy days, I still think last winter was one of the worst ones I have been through. I'm not a fan of the bitter cold and I found this outtake from January 6 of 2014, when the temperature set a record of minus 16 below zero. This vertical rainbow, or sun dog, was visible due to light hitting ice crystals in the atmosphere.   Most of my job is about being in the right place at the right time, and of course editing photos is all about picking the right one. In this instance I was in the right place at the right time and had a very easy time picking the image. I was photographing a pair of ice sculptures as they worked on the head of Abraham Lincoln. The first time that I visited them it was starting to look like a head. The second time I came back I was rewarded with this gem. In celebration of Abraham Lincoln's birthday and Valentine's Day, the Village of East Dundee put the recent snowfall to good use as it prepared for their "Love and Lincoln" event.
