Naper Blvd library closing for entry work

Naper Boulevard Library will be closed until 9 a.m. Saturday for installation of new flooring - part of a roughly $1 million renovation.

The closure begins at 5 p.m. Monday so crews can lay new tile and floor mats at the entrance, Naper Boulevard Library Manager Dave Della Terza said.

This is the first closure since renovations began in December to upgrade features such as lighting, power outlets, computers and 22-year-old furniture. Della Terza said closings longer than two days are rare for the library, but staying open while installing new entry flooring would be nearly impossible.

"Because that impedes access to the entrance of the building and because it is a project that could be potentially hazardous, we have to close during that time," Della Terza said.

While the library at 2035 S. Naper Blvd. is closed, work also will take place in the program room and lower-level restrooms. The program room will get new lighting, carpeting, walls and cabinets, while the restrooms will be remodeled for better accessibility with new sinks and hand dryers.

Since December, work on most elements of the renovation has been started but not finished. Portions of the building have closed at different times.

"I know our customers have been really appreciative of the fact that we've tried to keep as much of the library open as possible," Della Terza said.

The library is creating a new teen space in the former computer lab, and new carpet has been added there. Some smaller rooms also have been carpeted and Della Terza said new electrical lines have been run to support the installation of more power outlets for library visitors.

"Almost anywhere you're going to have a seat in the library, there's going to be power to plug in whatever you have with you," Della Terza said.

The library plans one more closing sometime next month to complete the renovation, move in new furniture and install 24 new computers for adults and eight for children.

Until the library reopens Saturday, users with items due can return them at the drive-through window or to the library's other branches at 200 W. Jefferson Ave. or 3015 Cedar Glade Drive.
