Fremont teacher honored as a LifeChanger

Submitted by Fremont School District 79

For those young students who are struggling to recognize words and sound out letters, Mundelein's Fremont Elementary School Reading Teacher Kara Drumke opens up a world of opportunity.

She gently sits her students in first and second grade down in the "magic" room and works with them as they begin to gain confidence. Drumke was recently nominated for National Life Group's LifeChanger of the Year, which recognizes educators for their work both in and out of the classroom.

Drumke started the Reading Intervention program at Fremont Elementary School 11 years ago. She helps children find books that they read, and created a Reading Buddies program at the school where support staff listen while students read to them.

She also created a Book Room, with books organized by reading level. The program has recently expanded to the upper grade levels.
