Services set for White Sox legend Minoso

The family of the late Minnie Minoso announced a public visitation will be held Friday from noon to 8 p.m. at Holy Family Church in Chicago.

A memorial service for the White Sox icon also will be held at noon Saturday at Holy Family Church, 1080 Roosevelt Road.

Immediately following the memorial service, a procession will drive by U.S. Cellular Field.

Minoso died early Sunday morning at the age of 90.

The first black player in White Sox history, the Cuban-born Minoso was a seven-time all-star.

Minoso played 12 years with the Sox. In 1,835 career games over 17 major-league seasons with Cleveland, the White Sox, St. Louis and Washington, the left fielder/third baseman batted .298 with 336 doubles, 83 triples, 186 home runs, 1,023 RBI, 1,136 runs scored and 205 stolen bases.

After his playing days ended, Minoso remained with the Sox and was a popular team ambassador who was highly visible at U.S. Cellular Field.

In lieu of flowers, the Minoso family has asked that any donations be made in Minnie's memory to Chicago White Sox Charities by visiting www.whitesox.com/donate.
