Man accused of 2013 Elgin rape found unfit for trial

A 35-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a woman he met at an Elgin party in August 2013 was recently found unfit to stand trial after an evaluation at the Kane County Diagnostic Center, according to court records.

Stanford E. Thompson, of Chicago, who was charged with charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault by force, criminal sexual assault and unlawful restraint, will be sent to the state's Department of Human Services for up to a year until he is fit for trial.

A fitness evaluation, which is confidential and impounded by the court, was presented to a judge last week.

Thompson had been held at the Kane County jail on $500,000 bail since his arrest.

According to Elgin police, Thompson met a 25-year-old at a party and lured her away from it, sexually assaulting her behind a garage.

Police were called to the 400 block of Barrett Street on the city's southwest side after the woman screamed for help.

Thompson was arrested about a block away, and the victim and other witnesses identified Thompson as the attacker, according to police.

A message left at the Kane County public defender's office, which is representing Thompson, was not immediately returned Monday.

If convicted, Thompson faces up to 30 years in prison and must register as a sex offender.
