For the past 22 months, my friends and neighbors have encouraged me to run again for Alderman. While serving on the City Council, I crafted many ordinances that helped protect the property values in West Chicago as well as the quality of life for our residents. I have personal contacts with some of the elected officials in the surrounding city's and villages. I will keep the lines of communication open for the 7th Ward with my e-mail newsletter "Notes from Nick" which I send out to over 600 e-mail addresses in the 7th Ward on a regular basis. It serves as an information relay as well as an open line of communication for the residents of the 7th WardWhat is your opinion of your community's present level of local sales and property taxes? Is the tax just right, too low or too high? Explain.West Chicago needs to increase the sales tax revenue coming into the city. The way to do that is NOT to increase the sales taxes or the property taxes, but to increase the number of sales tax generating businesses in the city. I think if West Chicago can market all of the available land on the major state routes of 38, 59, and 64, our sales tax revenue will greatly increase. This increase in sales tax revenue will allow West Chicago to reduce the property tax burden on the residents and business community. Also, the other taxing bodies will also see an increase in tax revenue as the empty land values increase with developments.Rate the efficiency of your town's police and fire coverage. Are the departments well prepared for the next decade? What, if anything, should be changed? Do you have specific public safety concerns?I think our police department coverage is fine, although I would like to see more regular patrols and a much more visible prescence in the 7th Ward. I think the department is well prepared but we need to start discussing plans for a new police station.Where, if anywhere, could the current budget be trimmed, and conversely, are there areas the budget does not give enough money to?I think West Chicago has to take a hard look at the reserve fund. I think the fund is a little large and a tax rebate is due to the residents. What's one good idea you have to better the community that no one is talking about yet?I want to explore expanding the drinking water plant to sell water to our surrounding communities. What other issues, if any, are important to you as a candidate for this office? The current lack of communication between City Hall and the residents. Please name one current leader who most inspires you.Peter RoskemWhat's the biggest lesson you learned at home growing up?Being accountable for your actions. If life gave you one do-over, what would you spend it on?Completing my Eagle Scout rank. What was your favorite subject in school and how did it help you in later life?History. Learning from past mistakes helps me make better decisions. If you could give your children only one piece of advice, what would it be?Graduate from college.
