Be honest separating church, state

The signs around the village are currently promoting a "Hopping Holiday Egg Hunt." Might I inquire what the "Hopping Holiday" is?

I presume said "Hopping Holiday" refers to Easter, the holiest day of the Christian calendar. The village is apparently afraid of calling it an Easter egg hunt, possibly because it fears offending people who do not celebrate Easter.

It is possible to celebrate Easter - or for that matter, Christmas - merely as a secular holiday. While the egg hunt is an Easter tradition, it is not a religious event. Using the word "Easter" for the egg hunt is hardly inherently offensive.

Referring to Easter as a "Hopping Holiday" is, however, offensive to those of us who do celebrate Easter as the major Christian holy day it is.

The village Christmas tree is a "Holiday" tree, yet the village menorah is not a "Holiday" candlestick. I think the village is pandering in the worst possible way to political correctness.

If you fear offending people by using words with Christian connections, then I suggest you eliminate the celebrations altogether. No "Holiday" tree, no "Hopping Holiday," and no menorah.

Go ahead and separate religion and state, but do it honestly and clearly.
