16-year-old boy charged in Aurora shooting death

A 16-year-old Aurora boy is charged with first-degree murder following a shooting Friday afternoon near downtown Aurora that police described as "gang-related."

Police aren't releasing the name of the accused gunman because of his age.

The shooting occurred at about 1 p.m. Friday on the 100 block of Bluff Street, just south of downtown. Investigators said the 16-year-old and a 17-year-old were passing by a home and the 16-year-old "exchanged words" with 17-year-old Gianni Aguirre in front of Aguirre's home. The 16-year-old pulled out a gun and began firing multiple shots at Aguirre, striking him once in the chest and killing him, police said.

The two teenagers fled, but were spotted by police six minutes later, two blocks from where the shooting occurred. Police recovered the gun they believe was used in the shooting in that same area.

Police released the 17-year-old after investigators determined he had "no knowledge of the impending incident" and he fled the shooting "out of fear."
