CLC Music Department announces spring concert lineup

Seven concerts, featuring a variety of choral and instrumental music, will be presented by the College of Lake County Music department March 8 to May 13.

The music department boasts four instrumental groups: the Monday Night Jazz Ensemble, the Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble, the Wind Ensemble and the Concert Band. CLC's choral program includes four ensembles: the Choir of Lake County, the CLC Singers, the Chamber Singers and the Gospel Choir. The ensembles feature musically talented CLC students, as well as community members.

Concerts are presented in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the CLC Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St., except for the April 17 Gospel Choir concert, which will be held in the C Wing Auditorium.

• Wind Ensemble with Guest Conductor Erik Oberg at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 8. The 45-member ensemble will play "Cloudburst" by Eric Whitacre, "English Folk Song Suite" by Ralph Vaughan Williams, "Dream Visions" by Kevin Purrone, "Evening at Pops" by John Williams and other selections. The concert will feature Erik Oberg, band director at Rock Valley College in Rockford since 2005, as guest conductor, and alto saxophone soloist Tim Barclay.

• 38th Annual Guest Artist Concert featuring Rufus Reid at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 14. Bassist, educator, composer and Grammy Award nominee Rufus Reid will perform with the CLC Monday Night Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Michael Flack. Reid's major professional career began in Chicago and has continued since 1976 in New York City. He continues to record, adding to his discography of more than 400 records, 18 of which are under his own name. For details, visit www.rufusreid.com. The Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Dave Hibbard, will also perform. Promotional assistance for this concert is provided by WDCB Radio, 90.1 FM. In addition, Rufus Reid will offer a free music clinic for music students and community members from noon to 1:30 p.m. March 14 in Room P101 at the CLC Grayslake campus.

• Gospel Choir Concert at 7 p.m. Friday, April 17, in Room C005 (C Wing Auditorium). The choir, under conductor Charles Thomas Hayes, will sing gospel songs and traditional African-American spirituals, including the concert arrangement of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" by Roland Carter and selections by Robert Ray, including "He Never Failed Me Yet" and "Gospel Mass."

• Jazz Ensembles Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 1. Big-band jazz classics and contemporary music played by musicians from the Monday and Tuesday Night Jazz Ensembles. Conductors are Dr. Michael Flack (Monday) and Dave Hibbard (Tuesday).

• Wind Ensemble Concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 3. An array of modern and classical wind music will be conducted by Dr. Michael Flack.

• Choral Concert at 8 p.m. Friday, May 8. The Chamber Singers, under conductor Ingrid Mikolajczyk, will perform "Six Chansons on Poems of Rainer Maria Rilke" by Paul Hindemith and other songs. The Choir of Lake County, under conductor Jeffrey DeLay, will sing music by John Rutter and songs of American heritage. The CLC Singers, under DeLay, will perform excerpts from the "Requiem" by Gabriel Fauré. The Gospel Choir, under conductor Charles Thomas Hayes, will sing a variety of spirituals and contemporary gospel music.

• Concert Band Concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 13. The 60-member band will play a range of musical styles, conducted by John Mose.

Tickets to instrumental concerts are free for children younger than 18. A $2 facility fee is added to concerts held in the James Lumber Center. The Box Office is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 90 minutes prior to each performance.

Community members are invited to participate in CLC Music department ensembles or to take private lessons for college credit or personal enrichment. The CLC Music Department offers 59 courses leading to two different degrees: associate in music or associate in fine arts in music.
